“Anxiety in the heart of a man weighs it down, but a good word makes him glad.” Proverbs 12:25
The man sat alone in his truck long after the engine was turned off. The day had been heavy—deadlines missed, bills piling up, words spoken too sharply at work. He stared at the steering wheel, replaying every mistake, every worry, every “what if.” The weight in his chest felt real, like something pressing down on him from the inside.
Inside the house, the lights were on. Supper was cooling on the stove. He knew he should go in, but for a moment, he just sat there, breathing slowly, trying to shake the heaviness. Anxiety has a way of doing that—quietly settling in, stealing strength, draining joy.
When he finally opened the door, his wife looked up from the kitchen table. She didn’t ask questions. She didn’t offer advice. She simply smiled and said, “I’m glad you’re home. We missed you today.”
Something shifted. The weight didn’t disappear all at once, but it loosened. A simple sentence—spoken at the right moment—cut through the noise in his mind. Later, as they sat together, she added, “You’re doing the best you can. We’re in this together.”
That good word did what no solution or explanation could do. It lifted his spirit. It reminded him he wasn’t alone. God often works that way—using ordinary words, spoken in love, to bring relief to a weary heart.
We all carry unseen burdens. Anxiety doesn’t always announce itself; sometimes it just presses down quietly until joy feels out of reach. But God reminds us that encouragement has power. A kind word, a gentle reminder, a moment of understanding can change the direction of someone’s day—or even their life.
Today, someone around you may be carrying a heavy heart. You may not be able to fix their problems, but you can speak life into them. A good word, offered in love, can make all the difference.
